"We bought a male GSD from Emily Kelty in 2016. He is a large, 90 lb, 10 month old male (still growing).
He is over the chart in intelligence and agility.
We are a one dog family and he loves us like a love sick teenager.
He is 100 percent trustworthy with our kids and babies, even other people's babies. They climb all over him, he follows them anywhere they go and plays their games with them, especially hide and seek.
He knows and welcomes all of our friends and family, even if he's only met them once. Unknown visitors are held at bay with a deep, intimidating bark until we tell him it's ok.
He's always aware of what is going on outside the house, even when he's inside, just by listening.
I've been surprised at how many people are intimidated by him, just because of his breed and look. He's actually very friendly, even to strangers on the street.
Because he is so smart, training is easy. For the same reason, he will constantly test the limits we place on him. Consistency is a must. If he gets away with anything he will remember and do it again.
If you're looking for a family dog, especially with protection and security in mind, these dogs are ideal. Be prepared to keep them for life. I think ours would rather die than go to another home. They shed a lot so get a good vacuum. He has a need to chew and eats rawhide like candy. Those are the only cons I can think of. They're phenomenal animals."
